EQ Boot Camp 2021

“Becoming self-aware is a gift you give to others!” - Rod Heppell, Sardis Fellowship

I love that line, and it’s really true.

Emotional Intelligence impacts our leadership, relationships, and ultimately our effectiveness in sharing the gospel. This statement drives the ongoing invitation extended to our pastors, ministry workers, and Immerse students to be a part of an EQ Boot Camp, and we have been privileged to host three of these in 2021!

In September, we gathered at Ness Lake Bible Camp and in November, we came together twice at Loon Lake Retreat Centre for a total of 46 leaders representing 13 of our churches!

These two and a half day boot camps offer instruction sessions, significant connection with other leaders, prayer and reflection time, and we do have fun!

Although this description sounds rather “retreat-like,” there are elements that catapult this experience into the realm of what we imagine when we hear the word “boot camp.” Each participant is invited to do the hard work of evaluating the “why” behind their emotions, thinking processes, and subsequent actions. The invitation to engage with vulnerability and humility while reviewing a 360 degree evaluation of your leadership and self-awareness can cause a bit of sweat!

It is an incredible privilege to engage with our leaders in ways that can significantly encourage and grow our collective capacity to share the gospel, minister to people, and improve relationships all for the glory of God.

If you are considering EQ Boot Camp, we invite you to join us February 7-9, 2022 at Loon Lake Retreat Centre, located in the UBC Research Forest, Maple Ridge BC.

What participants are saying about EQ Boot Camp:

I really appreciated the environment of trust and community that was experienced with other participants. There was a near-instant sense of camaraderie and support with the group and I could sense that in in the leadership team as well.
— Gary Powell, Northwest Langley Baptist Church
I have been to a variety of leadership workshops and seminars, but EQ boot camp taps into a whole different dimension of leadership that is essential to how we operate as leaders. As much as we focus on tact, skill and experience in leadership, EQ boot camp addresses the underlying driver that feeds into all of these elements. Having the time and space to revisit the key components of emotional intelligence will serve me and my ministry for years to come.
— Victor Maynard, Village Church
A good investment in becoming a better leader and being invited to go deeper into my roots to grow stronger in my foundations.
— Dayna Olson Brooks, Ridge Church
EQ Boot Camp was a fantastic experience, and for me, it was transformative for several reasons. First, it was a chance to get away from my regular rhythms of life and relax, take a breath and be silent enough to hear God speak. Secondly, the time with our coaches was amazing. Their vulnerability helped me and others open up faster, and they offered their wisdom and experience freely and without judgment. I had a great time and would recommend everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.
— Jesse Criss, Village Church
We are different after our EQ Boot Camp. I am different. We’ve grown in humility, in a greater awareness of those around us, and we are stronger as servants for having done so. A beautiful, challenging weekend that I would highly recommend for all.
— Dave MacPhee, Northstar Church
Well worth the time away to listen, reflect and learn. The Fellowship staff are skilled at leading us through the material and engaging with the ideas. I loved getting to know more people in our Fellowship.
— Rod Heppell, Sardis Fellowship
